Tregonning & Gwinear Mining Districts with Trewarvas

Where: Trewidden Gardens, Penzance

When: Thursday 7th July 2016

Picturing the Mines artists spent the day in the beautiful walled garden at Trewidden. As well as evidence of very early mining, possibly Roman or earlier in the fernery pit, powerful objects such as smelting kettles have been absorbed into the life of the garden, bearing witness to the smelting heritage of the Bolitho family. The many great estates are part of the Cornish mining story, mining fortunes shaped the houses, landscaped the grounds and gardens and funded plant collecting around the world. Working in the sun of these lovely gardens we thought also of the dark from which these fortunes came that helped to shape them.
